LinkedIn unveils 'Made-in-India' Lite app

New Delhi: After Facebook and Twitter, it is now LinkedIn that has unveiled a 'Lite' version of its app as the professional networking platform attempts to bring in more users on board.

The new 'LinkedIn Lite' Android app is designed to reduce data usage by 80 percent and is less than 1MB in size. In September last year, LinkedIn had launched a lightweight version of its mobile website.

"LinkedIn Lite app is first being rolled out to members in India. LinkedIn plans to roll out the mobile web version and the Android app in over 60 countries shortly," LinkedIn said in a statement.

The move will help LinkedIn find a place in more smartphones in developing countries like India that often faces network issues.

Also, with a significant chunk of the population using devices with low on-board memory, the small size of the app will help LinkedIn find more takers.

India is the second largest market for LinkedIn with more than 42 million members.

Interestingly, the 'Lite' app has been developed by LinkedIn's R&D team in Bengaluru. It also offers all key features like news feed, jobs, profile, network, messaging, notifications, and search.

"Besides providing a fast, data-light solution for professionals in slow network areas, we hope the LinkedIn Lite app will democratise access to economic opportunity," LinkedIn India Country Manager Akshay Kothari said.
