Mother seeks money for child’s treatment, husband calls to give triple talaq

Amid the fight in Rajya Sabha over the triple talaq bill, a woman in Uttar Pradesh has been given the same by her husband on telephone. The woman was given talaq by her husband because she sought money for the treatment of their differently-abled daughter.

This comes just a day after reports of another case in Uttar Pradesh wherein the husband, working in Saudi Arabia, sent an SMS to her wife pronouncing triple talaq.

The man, who belongs to Nandauli village in UP's Sultanpur district, has been married to the victim - Ruby - for two years. The couple has a son.

Alledging harassment, the victim claimed that her in-laws have been demanding dowry for some time.

“My in-laws used to harass me demanding for a vehicle. My husband ill-treated me as well. I received a message from him, where he gave me divorce,” said the victim.

The victim's father has not registered a police complaint, claiming that the divorce process is complete.

“I have a son and somehow want us to survive. This is my house now and I will not move away from here,” said the victim.

The controversial triple talaq bill that seeks to criminalise instant talaq with a provision of stringent punishment for the accused husband, could not be tabled in Rajya Sabha, which was adjourned sine die on Friday.

The bill seeks to criminalise triple talaq and suggests up to three years in jail as punishment.

The government is most likely to introduce it during the budget session that begins on January 29.

In view of strong resistance to the bill by Congress-led Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, where the Narendra Modi-led government lacks numbers, the Centre has the option to take the ordinance route.

However, the chances of it are grim as the government is keen on getting the bill passed with a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha.
