Yogi Adityanath govt's crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses: Here's why it is being opposed

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government's crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses is being opposed by the state's meat and fish sellers, who have begun an indefinite strike in protest against the move from Monday.

While the government has clarified that there is no need to panic as the crackdown is only against illegal slaughterhouses and no such order to close down chicken and egg shops has been issued.

Legal slaughterhouses should continue to follow regulations, said UP government minister SN Singh.

However, the government's action has so far met resistance from the local meat sellers, who have urged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to fight for the nation and not for `gosht`.

Small meat traders fear losing their business and local shop owners their livelihood if the government continues its crackdown on illegal and mechanized slaughterhouses.

Due to the strike, non-vegetarian food outlets, including the famous Tunday and Rahim's have shifted to mutton and chicken dishes after buffalo meat became scarce.

After coming to power, the Yogi Adityanath government has ordered closure of illegal slaughterhouses and strict enforcement of the ban on cow smuggling to fulfil a key electoral promise.
