The West Bengal government on Monday announced total lockdown across the state for two days till next week amid a spike in coronavirus COVID-19 cases. This comes in addition to the broad-based lockdown in containment zones. In the current week, Thursday and Saturday will be observed as a complete lockdown.

State Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay announced, "In an effort towards breaking the chain, state government announces complete lockdown for two days a week in addition to the broad-based lockdown in containment zones. In the current week, Thursday and Saturday will be observed as a complete lockdown."

Later a clarification was issued by the Home Secretary stating, "It is hereby clarified and reiterated in continuation of today's Press Conference that Statewide lockdown has, up till now, been announced for 23rd July, 25th July and 29th July 2020. No further advance announcement has yet been made."

Bandyopadhyay said that there are reports of community spread in certain areas following which the decision was taken.
