16 fresh cases of dengue in Delhi, total 224

New Delhi, Sept 15: Sixteen fresh cases of dengue
were reported in the national capital on Monday, taking the number
of infected people to 255 this season.

The rise in the number of dengue cases continued even as
civic agencies grapple with shortage in manpower as the
mosquito breeding checkers (DBC), have struck work demanding
regularisation of jobs.

"Sixteen more patients tested positive for the virus
today taking the number of afflicted persons to 255 this
season," said V K Monga, MCD Public Health Committee Chairman.

With September and October normally considered as peak
months for the spread of dengue, the number of cases are only
expected to rise, civic bodies admit.

However, they insist that there is no reason to panic as
the outbreak is well within control and the disease will not
break into epidemic proportions.

Civic bodies are on their toes and the sanitation-cum-
awareness drive on in the capital has helped check the rise in
the disease, the official said.

"While negotiations were on with the striking DBCs, a new
batch of breeding checkers will be brought into the field by
Monday," Monga said.

The onslaught of dengue has been more intense this year
as compared to recent years, a phenomenon attributed to the
early arrival of monsoon and the high levels of humidity.
