Kolkata, Oct 09: The Trinamool Congress-sponsored
12-hour 'Bangla bandh' on Monday united the entire opposition in
West Bengal as normal life was hit and over 6,200 bandh
supporters were arrested from different parts of the State.

Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy told reporters that
6,211 people were rounded up for trying to block road and rail
traffic.

The metropolis wore a deserted look with only a few
number of private buses, mini buses and taxis on the roads.
However, state buses and trams ran normally.

The attendance at the state secretariat was low, with the
home secretary putting it at 40 per cent and elsewhere at 52
per cent.

Most shops, markets and commercial establishments were
closed.

Train services on both Howrah and Sealdah division of
Eastern and South Eastern Railways were intermittently
disrupted by bandh supporters, railways sources said.

Underground railways services functioned normally, metro
railways sources said.

Sources at Airports Authority of India said that no
flight from the NSC Bose International Airport was cancelled
or delayed during the bandh.

The bandh, supported by the congress, BJP, Samajwadi
Party and the SUCI, was called to protest "police excesses" on
TC supremo Mamata Banerjee at Singur on September 25 during an
agitation against farm land acquisition for the Tata Motors
car project.
