Darshan Singh Yadav quits BJP, may join SP

In a setback to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, party's state executive committee member Darshan Singh Yadav on Tuesday resigned from its primary membership and his supporters claimed he was poised to join the Samajwadi Party.

Mainpuri, Oct 10: In a setback to the BJP in Uttar
Pradesh, party's state executive committee member Darshan
Singh Yadav on Tuesday resigned from its primary membership and his
supporters claimed he was poised to join the Samajwadi Party.

Darshan Singh, who has considerable clout in the
Yadav-dominated belt of western districts Etah, Kannauj,
Etawah, Firozabad, Mainpuri and Auraiya, made the announcement
at a meeting of his supporters in the presence of his brother
Sobaran Singh, a BJP MLA from Karhal.

Though Darshan Singh said he and his brother would soon
chalk out their future course of action, several of his
associates who quit along with him said he was readying to
join the SP.

He alleged that BJP had "deviated from its policies and
its leaders were busy serving their self-interests rather than
those of the country".

The party has failed to redress the problems of farmers,
backward classes, scheduled castes and tribes and minorities,
he alleged. He also accused the BJP of igniting communal
passions and creating divisions among communities.

Despite Sobaran Singh managing to wrest the Karhal seat
from the SP, the BJP had sidelined both him and his brother,
Darshan Singh said.

About 8,000 of his supporters in these six districts are
said to have quit the BJP, vowing to defeat the party in the
coming elections.
