Karunanidhi not to exert pressure for Nalini's release

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today declined to intervene on the issue of securing the release of Nalini, serving a life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Coimbatore, Oct 10: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today declined to intervene on the issue of securing the release of Nalini, serving a life term in the
Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

"I would be happy if she is released. But I will not exert pressure on anybody," he told reporters here when asked about DPI leader Thirumavalavan's demand in this regard recently.

Sharing the platform with Karunanidhi at an election rally in Madurai last week, Thirumavalavan urged the Chief Minister to see if Nalini could be released or her sentence reduced.

DPI had joined the DPA on the eve of the October 13-15 local body elections.

Nalini, married to LTTE activist Murugan, was originally sentenced to death by the trial court but the President commuted it to life at the request of Congress president Sonia
Gandhi. Murugan, also an accused in the case, has been sentenced to death.
