The cat’s out: LFW’s first day marked by wows

The first day of the Lakme Fashion week was nothing short of a glitzy starry event that saw the industry most sought after designers. With a list of names that included ace designers such as JJ Valaya, Manish Malhotra and Arjun Khanna the first day of the fashion event turned into a perfect curtain raiser for the four day fashion spectacle in store.

The first day of the Lakme Fashion week was nothing short of a glitzy starry event that saw the industry most sought after designers. With a list of names that included ace designers such as JJ Valaya, Krishna Mehta, Drashta Sarvaiya, Manish Malhotra and Arjun Khanna the first day of the fashion event turned into a perfect curtain raiser for the four day fashion spectacle in store.

Delhi based designer, JJ valaya gave the show a perfect opening by presenting his collection titled Paisa, a line that draws inspiration from his own `currency` - The Valaya Royael (VR) - that he had launched during the 11 th edition of the WIFW.

The collection that showcased a line offering motifs and textures inspired by coins and bearing his `royal` signature was kick starrted by model yurned actor Rahul Dev who walked down the ramp in an ivory suit worn over a light grey polo neck T-shirt.

Talking to reporters the designer stated, “All the outfits of my collection have motifs and textures of coins. It would differentiate it from my other brands We had recently launched our new currency - VR and the collection draws its inspiration from it. I have also used a lot of detailing to create coin-like motifs with gold and silver coloured fabrics.”

Valaya’s collection used a color palette inspired by nature that had colurs such as ivory, browns to bright red and black. "Red was the accent of my collection rest all were dull shades," he added.

In women`s wear the designer presented a wide range that varied form brown skirts and shirts to halter-tops, flared satin skirts. Besides short skirts there were also multi-layered frill skirts, robe tops, and dresses with oversized rectangular folds worn over red pants.

For the men, Valaya`s line comprised of ivory suits, shirts, jackets, black and brown double shaded velvet jackets teamed with slim fit trousers with red and ivory piping.

Speaking on this year`s trends, Valaya said: "The upcoming winter season would witness a mix of both drapes and dresses."

Manish Malhotra, bollywood`s favourite designer also held a smashing display of his creations. His line offered flowing satin gowns of varied sizes, styles and designs. Some had long sashes, others halter necks, or were double-shaded and gathered and let loose at the waist.

Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kajol, Urmila Matondkar and Amisha Patel sizzled on the ramp for their favourite designer.

There were also shirts, flared pants, short skirts and shorts with lots of glitter.

Krishna Mehta, the erstwhile designer also showcased her collection on the first day. Mehta didn’t have any tinsel towner doing rounds at the ramp for her as she said that her designs were her showstoppers.

This show was a comeback of sorts for Krishna, who has been busy establishing her label abroad. Her collection amalgamated wearable flowing dresses which enchanted the prople present. Her dresses were accompanied with wide zardosi belts clinching the waistlines which can be an instant shotbooster of glam to any look.

Designer Drashta Sarvaiya showcased her pleasant summery creations amidst the LFW`s first day havoc. What highlighted her creations were the quilted conical brassiers that she made her models wear, indicating the fact that inner wear as outerwear was in vogue again.
