Jaipur: Rajasthan Labour Department has issued a notification fixing minimum wage for domestic helps in the state. According to the notification, a person has be paid a minimum of Rs 5, 642 per month for an eight-hour shift per day for cooking, washing, baby sitting and other daily chores.
According to a report in the Times of India, the new salary rules are applicable from January 1, 2016. The new rule also specifies that employer has to pay double of the minimum wage per hour in case of overtime.
Domestic helps hired only for dish washing and laundry will have to paid a minimum of Rs 705 per month for a family of four. If the number of family members increases, the employee has to be paid 10 per cent extra.
The minimum wage prescribed in the notification is excluding food, clothes, accommodation and other perks.
Dhanraj Sharma, additional labour commissioner, said that the domestic helps were included in Scheduled 27 of the Minimum Wages Act eight years ago but now the department has fixed the number of working hours to prevent exploitation.
Sharma also told that the labour department will direct its inspectors to carry out raids and ensure the implementation of new guidelines.
