New Delhi: Is the Centre planning to bring back compulsory board exams in Class X? Yes, if speculation is to go by.
As per reports, the Central government is mulling to scrap the no-detention policy – it was introduced under the Right to Education Act – in a phased manner.
It is also looking at making the Class X board exams compulsory again for schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The two issues will on Wednesday be discussed at the meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). Among those present will be officials from the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, state education ministers, experts and academicians.
CABE is the highest education policy advisory body of the HRD Ministry.
It will be for the first time that the CABE will be holding a meeting after the new government came to power.
As part of the no-detention policy, students are allowed to proceed to the next class without being detained even if they fail to secure a passing grade. The policy is applicable for students studying in classes upto VIII standard.
The issues will be discussed in the wake of complaints from parents and teachers that the no-detention policy and optional Class X board exams have led to depletion in the quality of school education.
