Temple chariot procession kills 11 as it hits live wire in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur - In pics

Kalimedu village in Tamil Nadu was the scene of an incident after a temple car came in contact with a high voltage overhead line during the annual chariot procession of Appar Swami Temple.

In the incident, a total of 11 people died, three on spot and eight in the hospital during treatment. In addition, 15 others are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

IGP of Central Zone Tiruchirappalli, V Balakrishnan and Thanjavur SP Ravali Priya visited the Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital where the injured patients have been admitted, according to ANI's report.

In an expression of condolence for the loss of life, India's PM Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively for those who lost their lives.

As a mark of respect to the departed persons, Stalin moved a resolution conveying the House's condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families and it was unanimously passed.

An FIR has also been registered by the police and an investigation has started in connection with deaths due to electrocution during the chariot procession in Tamil Nadu, according to ANI's report.

All the injured people are been treated at Thanjavur Government Medical College and Hospital, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
