Pakistan downplays racial abuse episode in New Zealand

Karachi: Pakistan Cricket Board today played down the racial abuse of their national players in New Zealand during the third Test in Napier, saying they have nothing to complain about. According to New Zealand media reports, racist remarks were hurled at the Pakistani cricketers on the second day of the Test from the corporate box at McLean Park.

The report quoted a spectator as saying that he felt embarrassed by the "drunken stupidity" of the group which abused the visiting cricketers, calling them "Pakistani terrorists". But, Pakistan team manager Abdul Raquib, when contacted in Napier, said they had not reported any such incident to the match referee as required under ICC regulations.

"Our players heard nothing, they didn``t hear any racial taunts directed at them, we have no issues at all," he said. "One or two of the players heard something raucous from over the far side, but they could not decide what was being said and just brushed it off," he added.

Despite Raquib``s denial, a sign saying "no racist comments please" was displayed on the park``s scoreboard after the incident. PCB chairman Ejaz Butt, when contacted in Lahore, said he had not heard anything about the incident from team management.
