Points to Ponder: England v Ireland

Zeecric Bureau

Sighting the close geographical rivalry between the two teams, the match between England and Ireland promised to be one to watch out for. Debutant Ireland delivered somewhat to their expectations and English canyon went tipsy and curvy ultimately to steady in the end.

  • England’s top order toppled to a steady Irish bowling attack. Ed Joyce, on whom England trusted, failed to deliver. Michael Vaughan continued with his agonisingly poor batting form and was dismissed cheaply.
  • Ireland under Trent Johnston bowled pretty well to restrict England to the score of 266 runs. But the same bowling attack gave too many runs in the death overs only to see England accumulating that total.
  • Man of the match Paul Collingwood yet again proved middle order pillar as he made well deserved and credible 90 runs to help England gather a respectable total.
  • So was the case in Ireland as Niall O’ Brien proved that he is a talent to reckon with as he too made a score of 63 runs.
  • Ireland put up a strong fight against England. Ireland lost the match to England by only 48 runs.
  • Andrew Flintoff seeped through Irish batting order as he claimed four wickets to finish the Irish innings in 48th over.
  • Michael Vaughan poured in the surprise package as he bowled to Irish batsmen and promised to bowl some more overs in the World Cup if the situation would permit.
  • Ireland yet again proved that they are a solid unit and nobody should take them lightly. Ireland’s next match will be against South Africa. So will it be a replica of the Warm up match the two teams played before?
