Points to Ponder: West Indies v New Zealand

Zeecric Bureau

The insipid batting attack could not take the pressure of the overwhelming bowling attack by New Zealand. Jacob Oram set in the prelude that ended West Indies story.

  • Yet again except for Brian Lara and Chris Gayle nobody in the team looked enthusiastic enough to bat for long. West Indian batting was wrapped up within 45 overs and with the score of 177 runs on board.
  • While Oram provided the fuel, Shane Bond drove the wickets flurry to provide a virtual standstill to runs accumulating pace.
  • Windies bowling attack looked bleak, as they did not have a good target to defend. Except Daren Powell who took 2 wickets in 10 overs while giving away 39 runs, nobody performed.
  • Scott Styris yet again showed that he is going to prove hindrance in the middle of the Kiwi batting order. His unbeaten 80 runs off 90 balls were the shining armour under New Zealand’s defence.
  • West Indies has to win their remaining matches in the Super 8s to be in contention for the semi finals. The route to the semi finals would not be easy for Windies by any chance with teams like South Africa hovering around.

New Zealand has made things easier for themselves as they are just below Australia in the Super 8s list. The Kiwis are one of the best contenders to qualify for the next level.
